This is a moving memorial piece that features solos by the 1st flute, piccolo, alto flute and bass flute.
A deep somber mood is displayed throughout this composition with the solo flute soaring above the other instruments concluding with a final cadenza type of run and a concluding single high E as the ensemble fades out. Cluster chords and dissonant moments which quickly resolve are featured throughout this composition.
Composer Smith's catalogue of compositions range from beginning band to chamber works. He has also done a large number of arrangements and compositions for concert band. His Suite for Flutes and William Byrd Collection for flute choir were finalists in the National Flute Association Newly Published Music competition in 2004 and 2006.
This piece was selected as an honorary mention in the 2008 National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition.
