Antiphonal is an interchange between the three major groups of the band, the woodwind choir, the brass choir and the percussion ensemble. The use of these independent groups gives a purity of sound to the composition. The drive of the piece gives it a festive flavor. The sections continuously exchange position of importance with each other..
This composition essentially is written in the aeolian mode. Utilizing the key signature of E flat or C minor, the flowing scale patterns of the woodwinds contrast the fanfare type of themes in the brass and percussion sections. There are several brief solos for the principal instruments of the ensemble.
